Introduction of Rajasthan Varistha Nagrik Tirth Yatra Yojana: A Brief InsightThe

• Rajasthan Government started the Varistha Nagrik Tirth Yatra Yojana (वरिष्ठ नागरिक तीर्थ यात्रा योजना) in the year 2013 with the objective to fulfil the devotional desire of senior citizens of the state to visit the religious places.
• From that year to date, Rajasthan Tirth Yatra Yojana fulfils the desire of thousands of elderly people of the state by organising visits to famous religious places for them across India.TheThe
• Government of Rajasthan’s Devasthan Department is implementing this scheme in the state.
• Now, eligible senior citizens of Rajasthan who are 60 years or more than 60 years can travel to famous religious places within and outside India free of cost.
• They do not have to pay a single penny for their religious journey.
• Chief Minister of Rajasthan Shri Bhajanlal Sharma, has announced to provide a free pilgrimage visit to 36,000 senior citizens per year.
• The whole religious journey expenses, like food, accommodation and travelling, will be borne by the Rajasthan Government.
• Journey in railways will be arranged in AC coaches by the Government.
• Only physically fit, healthy and mentally sound people are eligible to apply for and visit religious places free of cost under the Rajasthan Tirtha Yatra Yojana for Senior Citizens.
• Around 50,000 senior citizens will travel to religious places by train and around 6,000 will visit the religious places via aeroplane.
• For the year 2026, the Rajasthan Government will provide a facility to visit Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu, Nepal and the journey will be done through an Aeroplane.

Benefits Provided to Eligible Beneficiaries

• Rajasthan Government will provide the following benefits to senior citizens of the State under its Varistha Nargrik Tirtha Yatra Yojana :-
  • Free Visit to famous Religious Places within and outside India.
  • All the tour expenses will be borne by the Rajasthan Government.
  • Religious Tour includes food, travel, and accommodation expenses.
  • Travelling in AC Train Coaches.
  • Facility of Medical Staff is also available during the journey.
  • Attendant Facility is available if the applicant’s age is above 70 years.

Eligibility Conditions Required to be Fulfilled

• Free of cost visit will be offered to only those applicants who fulfil the below-mentioned eligibility criteria of Varistha Nagrik Tirth Yatra Yojana of the Rajasthan Government :-
  • Senior Citizens of Rajasthan State are Eligible to Apply.
  • The age of the Applicant should be 60 years or more.
  • Applicant should be physically and mentally Fit.
  • Applicant should not have any Contagious/ Spreadable Disease.
  • Applicant and their Spouse should not be Income Tax Payees.
  • The applicant should not have availed the benefit of this scheme earlier.
  • Applicant and their Spouse should not be a Retired Gazetted Officer.

• Registration is required on the SSO Portal which can be done through the Jan Aadhaar Card Number or the Email ID.

• E Mitra Centre is also providing the facility to register senior citizens under the Varistha Nagrik Teertha Yatra Yojana of the Rajasthan Government.

Ans. Yes. The applicant can take their spouse along. The spouse can accompany even if their age is below 60 years. Spouse details must be filled in the application form at the time of applying.

Q. Is an attendant allowed under this scheme?

Ans. For rail travel, an attendant is allowed only if the applicant is above 70 years of age and has applied alone without spouse. The attendant must be between 21 and 50 years of age and must be a relative of the applicant. No attendant is allowed in air travel.

Q. Can senior citizens above 80 years travel by aeroplane under this scheme?

Ans. No. Senior citizens aged 80 years and above are not eligible for air travel under this scheme due to unavailability of air insurance for this age group.

Q. Which religious places are covered under this scheme?

Ans. The scheme covers 15 destinations by train including Haridwar-Rishikesh-Ayodhya-Varanasi, Vaishno Devi-Amritsar, Tirupati, Rameshwaram, Jagannathpuri, and others. For air travel, Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu, Nepal is covered with the journey from Jaipur to Delhi by bus and Delhi to Kathmandu by aeroplane.

Q. How are beneficiaries selected under this scheme?

Ans. Selection is done through a computerised lottery draw at the district headquarters. A district-wise quota is fixed based on population ratio. A waiting list of 100% extra and an additional waiting list of 100% extra are also prepared.

Q. Can a person who previously travelled under this scheme apply again?

Ans. No. A person who has already travelled under this scheme or whose lottery was selected but voluntarily did not travel is not eligible to apply again.

Q. Can a person who applied in previous years but was not selected apply again?

Ans. Yes. Applicants who applied in previous years but were not selected in the lottery are eligible to apply again.

Q. Is Income Tax payer eligible under this scheme?

Ans. No. The applicant and their spouse must not be Income Tax payers. A self-declaration to this effect must be submitted with the application.

Q. Are retired Gazetted Officers eligible under this scheme?

Ans. No. Applicants and their spouse who are retired Gazetted Officers from Central Government, State Government, Central or State Government undertakings, or local bodies are not eligible.
