Introduction of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana 3.0: A Brief Insight

Central Government had launched Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) on 1st of May 2016.
The main objective behind starting this scheme is to provide clean fuel to rural and deprived households who are still using traditional cooking fuels such as firewood, cow-dung cakes etc.
This scheme is implemented by the Central Government’s Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
The government through Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana is providing free gas connection along with a free-of-cost stove and first gas cylinder refill to eligible households.
LPG Connections provided under PM Ujjwala Yojana is completely deposit free and the cost will be borne by the Central Government which includes the Security Deposit of Cylinder, Cost of Pressure Regulator, Cost of Suraksha Hose, Cost of Domestic Gas Consumer Card Booklet and Installation Charges.
Apart from this, beneficiary women of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana will also going to receive a subsidy of Rs. 300/- per cylinder.
Beneficiary Women can avail the benefit of subsidy up to 9 refills of LPG Cylinder per year.
The initial target of the government is to provide 8 crore LPG Connections to eligible households by March 2020 under this scheme.
Central Government achieved the target earlier on the 7th of September 2019 when Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi handed over the 8th Crore LPG Connection in Aurangabad, Maharashtra.
Thereafter, the Central Government launched the 2.0 version of the PM Ujjwala Yojana, in which additional allocation of 1.6 crore LPG Connections was sanctioned.
This target was also achieved by the Government in December 2022.
Central Government again sanctioned an additional 75 Lakh LPG Connections under PM Ujjwala Yojana for three financial years, i.e. 2023-2024, 2024-2025 and 2025-2026.
But, this time, also Central Government also achieved this target in July 2024.
For the year 2025-2026, the Central Government launched the 3.0 version of the PM Ujjwala Yojana, in which an additional 25 Lakh connection is sanctioned.
As per the government data, the total number of LPG connections released under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana is 10,33,46,386.
With the latest allocation of LPG connections, the Government of India is taking the overall target under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Scheme to 10.6 crore connections.
Central Government allocated Rs. 12,000/- for the year 2025-2026 for the smooth implementation of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana.
Both Online and Offline modes is available to apply for LPG Connection under PM Ujjwala Scheme of the Central Government.

Women Beneficiaries can also apply for “Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana” in which the Central Government is providing financial assistance during the time of pregnancy.

Benefits Provided to Eligible Beneficiaries

Central Government under its Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana will provide the following benefits to all eligible women applicants :-

Cash Assistance of Rs. 2,050/- for PM Ujjwala Yojana Connection.
Cash Assistance includes the following :-
- Rs. 1,700/- Security Deposit for 14.2 Kg Cylinder.
- Rs. 950/- Security Deposit for 5 Kg Cylinder.
- Rs. 150/- for Pressure Regulator.
- Rs. 100/- for LPG Hose.
- Rs. 25/- Domestic Consumer Card.
- Rs. 75/- for Inspection/ Installation/ Demonstration Charges.
Beneficiaries of PM Ujjwala Yojana will also receive the first LPG refill and Stove free of cost.
Subsidy of Rs. 300/- on every refill of PM Ujjwala Yojana Gas Cylinder.
Subsidy is Applicable on 9 Gas Cylinder Refills per year.

Eligibility Conditions Required to be Fulfilled

The benefits of free LPG Connection and subsidy on the refill of Gas Cylinder will be provided to only those beneficiaries who fulfil the below mentioned eligibility criteria of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana of the Central Government:-
- Women applicants having 18 years of Age are Eligible.
- There should be no LPG Connection in the name of the Women Applicant within the Household.
- Women applicants should be belong to Poor Household.
- Male Members in a Family is not eligible to apply.

Documents Required to be Attached

The documents that are required at the time of applying under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana of the Central Government are mentioned below :-
- Know Your Customer (KYC) Application Form.
- Aadhaar Card of the Applicant.
- Address Proof of the Applicant.
- Self Declaration as per Annexure I. (For Migrant Applicants)
- Family Ration Card.
- Adult Family Members Aadhaar Card.
- Bank Cancelled Passbook or Cancelled Cheque.
- Deprivation Declaration Form.
- Latest Colour Passport Size Photo.

How Beneficiaries Can Avail the Benefit of this Scheme

Eligible Women Applicants can apply to get a free gas connection and subsidy on the refill of cylinder under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana through the following ways.
- Through the Online Application Form.
- Through the Offline Application Form.

Online Application Process

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana has a dedicated website through which beneficiary applicants can apply for this scheme online.
Visit the Official Website of PM Ujjwala Yojana and Click on “Apply for New Ujjwala PMUY Connection”.
A new window will appear in which Eligibility Criteria and Documents Required for PM Ujjwala Yojana Connection is written, read them carefully and click on “Click Here to Apply for New PMUY Connection”.
Again a new window will appear from which women applicant will have to choose the LPG Gas Connection provider company (Indane or Bharat Gas or HP Gas) of their own choice and click on Click Here to Apply.
Every LPG Gas Connection provide company has different way of online registration under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana.
Just click on Registration for LPG Connection and choose Ujjwala Yojana 3.0 Connection.
Fill the Online Application Form of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana and upload all the required documents.
Checked all the filled information and submit the PM Ujjwala Yojana 3.0 Online Application Form.
LPG Gas Company Officials will verify the received application form and make a list of eligible women beneficiaries.
The list of selected women beneficiaries will also be forwarded to Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
Gas Company will then installed the Stove and pre filled LPG Cylinder in the house of selected women applicants.
Women Applicant doesn’t have to pay any amount of rupees for the installation and first LPG Cylinder which is being provided free of cost under Central Government’s Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana.

Offline Application Process

Any women applicant can also apply for gas connection under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana through the Offline Application Form.
The Offline Application Form of PM Ujjwala Yojana is available in the Office of LPG Distribution Companies.
Beneficiary Women Applicant will just have to visit the nearest LPG Distributor Company which are Indane, HP Gas and Bharat Gas.
Collect the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana Application Form from any of the above mentioned offices and filled it correctly.
Attached all the required documents with the Application Form.
Submit the PM Ujjwala Yojana Application Form along with all the documents in the same LPG Distributor Company.
The Officials of the LPG Company will verify the details and make a list of eligible applicants.
Selected Women Applicant will then receive free stove and free first refill of gas under Central Government’s Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana.
