Introduction of Andhra Pradesh Dr NTR Vaidya Seva Scheme: A Brief Insight

A serious illness can push any poor family into a financial crisis overnight. Hospital bills for heart surgery, cancer treatment, or kidney disease can wipe out years of savings in days. To protect BPL families from this catastrophic financial burden and ensure they receive quality healthcare without paying a single rupee, the Government of Andhra Pradesh runs the Dr NTR Vaidya Seva Scheme, the state’s flagship health assurance programme.

The scheme was earlier known as the Rajiv Aarogyasri Scheme. After the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, the government renamed it as Dr NTR Vaidya Seva vide G.O.Ms. No.157 dated 17.12.2014, and enhanced the financial coverage significantly. The Dr NTR Vaidya Seva Trust implements the scheme under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, administered by an IAS Officer as CEO.

Under Dr. NTR Vaidya Seva Scheme, eligible families with annual income up to Rs. 5,00,000 receive cashless treatment up to Rs. 25,00,000 per family per year at 523 empanelled government and private hospitals across all 26 districts of Andhra Pradesh. The scheme covers 3,257 listed therapies across 31 medical specialities, including cardiac surgery, cancer treatment, neurosurgery, kidney care, orthopaedics, organ transplantation, and more. All pre-existing conditions are covered from Day 1. Cancer patients have no financial limit.

The entire treatment process is cashless from admission to surgery, daily medicines, meals, investigations, nursing care, 10 days of medicines at discharge, and bus fare home. A Vaidya Mithra is posted at every empanelled hospital to assist patients with registration, eligibility verification, pre-authorisation, and discharge. Beneficiaries can also call the 104 medical helpline available 24×7, 365 days a year for any guidance.

Families across India who also want to check central government health coverage can explore Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, which provides Rs. 5 lakh per family per year cashless treatment to SECC-listed families at empanelled hospitals across India.

Senior Citizens who cross 70 years of age can avail the benefit of cashless treatment up to Rs. 5 lakh under the Ayushman Bharat Vay Vandana Card Scheme.
