Introduction of Delhi Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana: A Brief Insight
Delhi Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta officially launched the Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana (लखपति बिटिया योजना) on 2nd March 2026 in the presence of the President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu. The scheme came into full effect from 1st April 2026, as notified in the Delhi Gazette on 31st March 2026. The Department of Women and Child Development of the Delhi Government is responsible for the overall execution and supervision of this scheme.
The Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana replaces the earlier Ladli Yojana, which had been running since 2008. The new scheme introduces a revised and upgraded investment structure with significantly higher maturity benefits. Unlike the previous scheme, the Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana extends financial support all the way through graduation and professional diploma courses, making it more comprehensive and future-oriented.
Think of this scheme as the government opening a savings account in your daughter’s name the day she is born and adding money to it every time she moves to a new class or starts a new course. The government deposits the money with SBI Life Insurance, where it grows over time. By the time the girl completes her graduation and turns 21, she receives approximately Rs. 1,25,000/- directly in her Aadhaar-linked bank account. This money can help her pursue higher studies, start a career, or meet any other important life goal.
The scheme limits benefits to two girl children per family, and only families with an annual income of up to Rs. 1,20,000/- are eligible. The girl must be born in Delhi, and the family must be a bona fide resident of Delhi for at least three years before applying. Girls studying in government, MCD, NDMC, or government-recognised schools in Delhi can apply under this scheme.
One important feature is that existing beneficiaries of the Ladli Scheme will also benefit from automatically becoming eligible for the higher education milestones under this new scheme, provided they remain unmarried till the age of 18 years. Applications are accepted online only through the dedicated SBI Life Portal. Parents or guardians must submit the application within one year of the girl’s birth or within 90 days of her admission at each subsequent milestone.
