Introduction of West Bengal MAA Canteen Scheme: A Brief Insight

  • West Bengal Government started MAA Canteen Scheme in the whole of State on 21-02-2021.
  • The main objective behind starting this scheme is to provide fresh, pure, and nutritious food at subsidized rates so everyone can afford it.
  • Department of Urban Development & Municipal Affairs of West Bengal Government is the nodal department of this scheme.
  • This scheme is implemented with the help of State Urban Development Agency.
  • West Bengal Government will open MAA Kitchens/ MAA Canteens in Urban Local Bodies limit under its MAA Canteen Scheme in order to provide subsidized foods to needy and poor people.
  • Each MAA Canteens will be run by Self Help Groups preferably managed by Women.
  • Pure, Fresh, Tasty, and Nutritious Food at just Rs. 5/- per plate will be provided to each beneficiary at MAA Canteens.
  • The food items which are provided in MAA Canteens are :-
    • Rice.
    • Vegetables Sabzi.
    • Dal.
    • Egg Curry. (On Sunday)
    • Chutney.
  • Every day during lunch hours from 1 PM to 3 PM, the above-mentioned food will be distributed to poor people at just Rs. 5/- per plate.
  • The government of West Bengal will also provide a subsidy of Rs. 15/- per plate to Self Help Groups to compensate them.
  • Some MAA Canteens are run on a token system in which token will be distributed from 12 PM to 1 PM.
  • And some MAA Canteens will serve food on a first come first serve basis.
  • Earlier MAA Canteen Scheme of the West Bengal Government is known by “Sulabh Annasathi Yojana”.
  • The other popular name of this scheme is “MAA Canteen Prakalpa” or “MAA Canteen Yojana West Bengal”.
  • At present 330 MAA Canteens are functional in whole of West Bengal in which around 8.53 crore meals will be distributed to needy people.
  • Self Help Groups can apply for tender to run MAA Kitchen/ Canteen under West Bengal Government’s MAA Canteen Scheme by contacting the State Urban Development Agency.
  • Needy and Poor People can visit their nearest MAA Canteen at lunch hours and avail the benefit of tasty food at just Rs. 5/- per plate.

Benefits Provided to Eligible Beneficiaries

  • Government of West Bengal will provide the following benefits to all eligible people under its MAA Canteen Scheme :-
    • MAA Canteens/ Kitchen will be opened in every Urban Local Bodies.
    • Each MAA Canteens will be run by Self Help Groups.
    • Subsidized Food will be provided in each MAA Canteens.
    • Poor and Needy Person will get Lunch at just Rs. 5/- per Plate at MAA Canteens.
    • Subsidy of Rs. 15/- per Plate will be provided by West Bengal Government to Canteen Management.
    • Each Food Plate consists Rice, Dal, Vegetables, Egg Curry and Chutney.

Eligibility Conditions Required to be Fulfilled

  • Food Plate at just Rs. 5/- at MAA Kitchens which are opened under West Bengal Government’s MAA Canteen Scheme will only provided to below mentioned beneficiaries :-
    • Poor and Needy Persons of Urban Areas.
    • Migrant Workers.

Documents Required to be Attached

  • In order get food at just Rs. 5/- per plate at MAA Canteens, the beneficiary will have to show any of the below-mentioned identification card :-
    • Aadhaar Card.
    • Voter Identity Card.
    • Any Identity Proof of West Bengal.

How Beneficiaries Can Apply to Avail the Benefit of this Scheme

  • There is no need to apply for the MAA Canteen Scheme of West Bengal in order to get tasty and nutritious food at just Rs. 5/- per plate.
  • Poor and Needy Residents of Urban Area can go and visit their nearest MAA Canteen which are opened by the Government of West Bengal under its MAA Canteen Scheme.
  • There will be a token system in some of the MAA Canteens and some canteen serve food on first come first serve basis.
  • Token Collection time at MAA Canteens is from 12 PM to 1 PM.
  • And the food serving time at MAA Canteens is from 1 PM to 3 PM.
  • The menu of food plate which is served at MAA Canteens are Rice, Dal, Vegetable, Chutney and Egg Curry.
  • Each and Every MAA Canteen is also have proper sitting place where beneficiary can sit with peace and enjoy their food at just Rs. 5/- per plate.
  • MAA Kitchens/ Canteens is opened in all 7 Municipal Corporation District Headquarter of Urban Local Bodies which inlcude a total of 34 Urban Local Bodies.
  • Beneficiary can visit any MAA Canteen in their area, collect token, pay Rs. 5/- for food and enjoy nutritious, tasty and fresh food in lunch hours.
