Introduction of Shakti Scheme Karnataka: A Brief Insight
- Karnataka Government launched one of its 5 guarantees, named “Shakti Scheme” on 11-06-2023.
- The main objective behind starting this scheme is to provide economic relief to women through empowering them financially.
- Karnataka Government provides free of cost bus rides to all women residents of the State under the Shakti Scheme.
- Shakti means “Power” and through this scheme, women beneficiaries can able to save around Rs. 680/- to Rs. 1,300/- per month, which can empower them financially.
- Women, Girls Students, and Transgenders individuals will now travel free of cost in Karnataka Government Buses.
- Beneficiary women will only have to show a photograph-based, valid identity card to the bus conductor, which shows that they are permanent residents of Karnataka.
- Bus Conductor will issue a Zero Amount Bus Ticket/ Pink Ticket to the Women Beneficiary under the Shakti Scheme.
- Women Beneficiaries can only avail the benefit of free of cost bus rides in the buses operated by any of the following transport corporation :-
- KKRTC. (Kalyan Karnataka Road Transport Corporation)
- BMNTC. (Bangalore Maha Nagar Transport Corporation)
- NWKRTC. (North West Karnataka Road Transportation)
- KSRTC. (Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation)
- There is no limit to travel; beneficiaries can travel unlimited within the boundary of Karnataka under the Shakti Scheme.
- The benefits of free bus rides under the Shakti Scheme will only be applicable in Regular Transport Buses, Ordinary Buses, Express Buses, and Urban Transport Buses.
- If the beneficiary travels in AC Buses, Sleeper AC Buses, Non AC Sleeper Buses, and in Volvo/ Luxury Buses, then they are not eligible to avail the benefit of free bus ride under the Shakti Scheme.
- More than 324 crore free bus tickets have been issued to women under this scheme.
- Due to the Shakti Scheme, the women’s participation in the workforce has increased by 12%.
- Government of Karnataka also sets some routes under the Shakti Scheme on which free bus rides for beneficiaries is available.
- Karnataka Shakti Scheme Smart Card is not available and will not be issued, and there will be no Shakti Scheme online registration.
- This scheme is also known by another name, i.e. “Shakti Yojana Karnataka”.
- Just take a bus, show a valid identity card of Karnataka, get a zero-amount bus ticket/ pink ticket, and avail the benefit free bus ride under the Shakti Scheme of the Government of Karnataka.
- Recently Karnataka Government set the world record with over 500 crore women traveling in buses free of cost under the Shakti Scheme.
Benefits Provided to Eligible Beneficiaries
- Government of Karnataka will provide the below-mentioned benefits to all eligible women, girl students and transgender beneficiaries of the State under its Shakti Scheme :-
- Women can avail an Unlimited Free Bus Ride within Karnataka.
- No need to pay the ticket amount; a zero amount ticket will be issued.
- Free Ride will only be applicable in government-run Buses.
- Women will only have to show a valid photo-based identity card of Karnataka.
Eligibility Conditions Required to be Fulfilled
- Free of Cost Bus Rides in State Buses of Karnataka will only be provided to those beneficiaries who fulfill the following eligibility criteria of Shakti Scheme:-
- Women beneficiaries who are Permanent residents of Karnataka are Eligible.
- Girls Students of 6 years to 12 years of age are also eligible.
- Transgender individuals are also Eligible for a Free Bus Ride.
- Free Bus Ride will only be provided in Ordinary, Urban Transport, Regular, and Express Transport Buses.
- No Free Bus Ride in AC, Non-AC Sleeper, AC Sleeper, and Luxury/ Volvo Buses.

- Beneficiary Women will have to show any of the following valid identity proof of Karnataka to the bus conductor at the time of availing the bus journey free of cost under Shakti Scheme :-
- Aadhaar Card.
- Voter Identity Card.
- Any Photograph-based Identity Proof.
How Beneficiaries Can Apply to Avail the Benefit of this Scheme
- There is no need to apply for the Shakti Scheme separately in order to avail the benefit of free-of-cost bus service within Karnataka.
- Earlier, the Government of Karnataka announced that issue Shakti Scheme Smart Cards to women beneficiaries to identify eligible beneficiaries.
- But later, the government dropped the idea of issuing the Shakti Smart Card because of technicalities.
- Now, to avail the benefit of a free bus ride under the Karnataka Government’s Shakti Scheme, beneficiary women will have to show the Aadhaar Card or any Identity Proof of Karnataka to the bus conductor.
- Bus Conductor will check the Identity Proof of Women and issue a Zero Ticket under the Shakti Scheme.
- Bus Travel with Zero Ticket will only be applicable within the state boundary of Karnataka.
- Karnataka Government will then reimburse the ticket amount to the State Road Transport Corporation.
