Details of Assam Shraddhanjali Scheme

Introduction of Assam Shraddhanjali Scheme: A Brief Insight

  • Assam Government launched the Shraddhanjali Scheme in the State on 06-10-2025.
  • It was approved by the Cabinet on 22 June 2025.
  • Political Department of the Assam Government is the nodal department of the Shraddhanjali Scheme.
  • Shradhanjali Scheme will be implemented with the help of the Police Department.
  • The government observes that many families of Assam are unable to transport the mortal remains of their loved ones who died outside the state due to the high cost of transportation and legal procedures.
  • So, with an objective to ease the procedure and dignified transportation of the deceased body, the Assam Government launched the Shraddhanjali Scheme in the state to facilitate an easy, lawful and hassle-free transportation of bodies of Assam-domiciled persons from other states to Assam.
  • Under the Shradhhanjali Scheme, if any domiciled resident students who are studying outside the state or any person who is doing a low-paying job in other states across India dies due to a road accident, murder or due to any special circumstances, then their mortal remains/ body will be brought back to Assam for dignified burial.
  • It is a free-of-cost service provided by the Assam Government in collaboration with the State Police.
  • Government of Assam designated the Assam Police Special Branch as the nodal agency for the implementation of the Shraddhanjali Scheme.
  • A Deputy Inspector General (DIG) rank police officer of the Special Branch is the State Nodal Officer of the scheme.
  • Whereas, the SSP of every district is the District Nodal Officer of their respective districts.
  • The facility of free transportation of mortal remains of the deceased is not for financially well-off families or to those families who can make their own arrangements.
  • Patients going to other States for medical treatment and die there during treatment are not eligible to avail the facility of the Shraddhanjali Scheme of the Assam Government.
  • Any person, whether it is from family, friends, relatives, police or any individual, can report the death of an individual who was a resident of Assam State and died in another state.
  • Report under the Shraddhanjali Scheme of the Assam Government can be done through :-

    • Visit the Police Headquarters or Police Station.
    • Sewa Setu Portal.
  • After receiving the information, the State Nodal Officer with the District Nodal Officer takes the matter and investigates the matter and gets in touch with the officials of the concerned state.
  • Arrangement of the repatriation of the body will be made and the State Nodal Officer will handle the inter-state logistics and complex cases to ensure a dignified farewell in Assam.
  • Chief Minister of Assam Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma also launched the 3.0 Version of the Orunodoi Scheme, in which monthly financial assistance of Rs. 1,250/- will be provided to eligible women beneficiaries.

  • Government of Assam under the Shradhhanjali Scheme will provide the following benefits to the eligible domiciled people of the State :-
    • Respectful and Hassle-Free Transport of Deceased Persons from outside Assam.
    • Applicable for All Domiciled in Assam State, irrespective of the Cause of Death or Background.
    • Criminal Background Deceased is not eligible.
    • Scheme Benefit Applies across all Indian States.

Eligibility Conditions Required to be Fulfilled

  • The benefits of free transportation of the deceased body from outside Assam to bring it back to Assam will be provided to only those people who fulfill the following eligibility criteria of the scheme :-
    • Bonafide Residents of Assam.
    • Specially Students and Low Paying Job Workers are Eligible.
    • Financial Well Off, Patients undergoing Medical Treatment outside Assam are not eligible for this scheme benefits.

  • The following documents will be required at the time of applying for the benefits of the Shraddhanjali Scheme of the Government of Assam :-
    • Deceased Person Identity Proof.
    • Deceased Person’s Residence Proof.
    • Mobile Number.
    • Deceased Person Current Photograph.
    • Any other documents required by the Authority.

How Beneficiaries Can Apply to Avail the Benefit of this Scheme

  • Assam Government notified a very simple application process of the Shraddhanjali Scheme to bring back the mortal remains of deceased Assamese individuals.
  • Any family member, friend, relative, public servant, public representative or any acquaintance can inform the Police Control Room about the deceased person through the 112 Helpline Number or they can also call on 0361-2381511 or WhatsApp or Call on 9181014888.
  • Informants can also inform the District Police Headquarters or the concerned Police Station regarding the death of a person of Assam in another State.
  • They have to share the following details to the Police :-
    • Place, Date, Time and Manner of Death.
    • Deceased Place of Residence.
    • District of Deceased.
    • Nearest Police Station Details.
    • Relatives/ Number of Kins of Deceased.
  • After receiving the information about the deceased person, the State Nodal Officer of the Shraddhanjali Scheme, who is a DIG-level Officer of the Special Branch of Assam Police will coordinate with the State Nodal Officers of the other States.
  • With coordination, the State Nodal Officer of the Shraddhanjali Scheme will monitor the situation and facilitate the dignified handling and transportation of the body of a deceased person to Assam.
  • Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of the concerned district will be the District Nodal Officer of the Shraddhanjali Scheme for the cases pertaining to their districts.
  • In the coming days, the Assam Government is going to provide a service on Sewa Setu Portal through which Assam residents can easily post the information about the death a person in other state.
