Introduction of Bihar Mukhyamantri Vidyut Upbhokta Sahayata Yojana: A Brief Insight
- Bihar Government started Mukhyamantri Vidyut Upbhokta Sahayata Yojana (बिहार मुख्यमंत्री विद्युत उपभोक्ता सहायता योजना) in the State in which subsidy on the electricity charges per unit will be provided to consumers.
- But, on July 18, 2025, the Cabinet of Bihar Government approved the extension of this scheme and decided to provide free electricity to all domestic housholds up to 125 units.
- Bihar Government’s State Power Holding Company Limited is the implementing agency of this scheme.
- The Domestic Electricity Connection Holders of the state will now avail the benefit of free of cost electricity of 125 units every month under Government of Bihar’s Mukhyamantri Vidyut Upbhokta Sahayata Yojana.
- They do not have to pay any type of charges if they consume less than 125 units of electricity per month.
- The benefits of the scheme also includes the other types of charges such as Energy Charges, Electricity Duty and Fixed Charges.
- Both, Rural and Urban households who has a valid domestic electricity connection is eligible to avail the benefit of free electricity up to 125 units under the CM Vidyut Upbhokta Sahayata Yojana.
- If in any month the consumption of a consumer is more than 125 units then they will have to pay the electricity charges on the exceeding units of electricity as per the subsidized rates.
- Bihar Government also encourages the beneficiaries of Mukhyamantri Vidhyut Upbhokta Sahayata Yojana to install rooftop solar plant within 3 years.
- Residents of Bihar can apply under “PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana” to install solar plant on the rooftop in which a subsidy up to Rs. 78,000/- will be provided by the Central Government.
- Government estimates that around 1 Crore 89 Lakh families is getting the benefit of free electricity up to 125 units per month under this scheme.
- Bihar Government allocated Rs. 15,995/- Crore for the year 2025-2026 for the smooth implementation of Mukhyamantri Vidyut Upbhokta Sahayata Yojana of the Government of Bihar.
- There is no need to apply separately to avail the benefit of Bihar Government’s Free Electricity Scheme.
- All Consumers are automatically eligible for the benefits of this scheme if their mothly electricity consumption is up to 125 units.

Benefits Provided to Eligible Beneficiaries
- Bihar Government under its Mukhyamantri Vidyut Upbhokta Sahayata Yojana will provide the following benefits to all the electricity consumers of the State :-
- Free of Cost Electricity will be provided to Domestic Electricity Connection Consumers.
- 125 Units per month free of cost is applicable under this scheme.
- Subsidy will also provided on the Extra Amount of Electricity Unit used after consuming 125 units.
- Free Monthly Electricity includes Energy Charge, Fixed Charge or Electricity Duty.
- Other Electricity Consumers can avail the benefit of subsidy on per unit electricity charge as applicable earlier.
Eligibility Conditions Required to be Fulfilled
- Free of cost electricity up to 125 Units per month will be provided to only those beneficiaries who fulfill the following mentioned eligibility criteria of Bihar Government’s Mukhyamantri Vidyut Upbhokta Sahayata Yojana :-
