Introduction of Assam Babu Asoni: A Brief Insight

• The New Year 2026 has brought very good news for boys’ students in Assam.
• On 1st January 2026, Chief Minister of Assam Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a very big scheme for boys students of the state.
• The name of the scheme is “Babu Asoni” alias “Chief Minister Nijut Babu Asoni” aka “Babu Scheme”. (असम बाबू असोनी)
• Government of Assam’s Department of Higher Education is the implementing department of this scheme.
• The primary objective of the government in initiating this scheme is to encourage boys from Assam to pursue and complete their higher education.
• The Assam Government is already operating the Mukhyamantri Nijut Moina Scheme for girls in the state, under which they will receive monthly financial assistance.
• So, the government also felt the need to start a financial assistance scheme for boys so that they get motivation and support to complete their higher education.
• Monthly Financial Assistance as a scholarship will be provided to all eligible students who are pursuing Undergraduate (BA or B.Sc or B.Com) and postgraduate (MA or M.Sc or M.Com) courses within Assam.
• First Year Undergraduate students will receive Rs. 1,000/- per month assistance for a period of 10 months (Total Rs. 10,000/- per year) under the Babu Asoni Scheme of the Assam Government.
• And, the First Year Post Graduate students will receive Rs. 2,000/- per month for 10 months (Total of Rs. 20,000/- per year) monetary assistance under the Assam Government’s Babu Scheme.
• If any student’s family income is more than Rs. 4 lakh per year, then they are not eligible to apply for a scholarship under this scheme.
• Any boy student studying in the first year of a under graduate course and had already received the benefits of the Chief Minister Jibon Prerana Scheme cannot apply for the Babu Aasoni Scheme of the Assam Government.
• Any male student studying in the first year of a postgraduate course and already receiving benefits under the Banikanta Kakati Merit Award Scheme cannot apply for the Babu Aasoni Scheme of the Assam Government.
• Eligible students can obtain the Nijut Babu Aasoni application form from their respective colleges.
• Students should collect the form, complete all details accurately, and submit it to the college to receive the monthly financial incentive directly into their bank accounts under the Assam Government’s Babu Scheme.
• The Assam Government will start disbursing financial assistance to beneficiary students under the Nijut Babu Aasoni scheme from 01-02-2026.

Benefits Provided to Eligible Beneficiaries

• Undergraduate and Post Graduate Students of Assam will now receive the following benefits from the Government under the Babu Asoni Scheme :-
  • Monthly Financial Assistance will be provided to Boys Students.
  • 1st Year Undergraduate Students will receive Rs. 1,000/- per month for 10 months.
  • 1st Year Post Graduate Students will receive Rs. 2,000/- per month for 10 months.
  • Financial Assistance will be directly transferred in the bank account of the student.
  • The scheme will not provide any financial incentive during summer vacations or for any break that lasts more than one month.

Eligibility Conditions Required to be Fulfilled

• Monthly Financial Assistance will be provided to only those eligible students who fulfil the below-mentioned eligibility criteria of Assam Government’s Babu Asoni :-
  • Permanent Resident Students of Assam are eligible to apply.
  • Only Boys Students are Eligible for Monthly Assistance.
  • A student should be currently studying in any 1st year of an Undergraduate or 1st year of Post Graduate Course within Assam.
  • The Annual Family Income of the student should not be more than Rs. 4 Lakh per year.
  • The scheme allows only students enrolled in Government or Provincialised educational institutions to apply.
  • Undergraduate students who already receive benefits under the Chief Minister Jibon Prerana Scheme cannot apply for this scheme.
  • Similarly, postgraduate students who receive benefits under the Banikanta Kakati Merit Award Scheme are not eligible for the Babu Aasoni.
  • Married male students cannot claim the incentive amount under this scheme.

  • Undergraduate and Post Graduation Details.
  • Family Ration Card or Income Certificate.
  • Enrollment Number of SAMARTH.

How Beneficiaries Can Apply to Avail the Benefit of this Scheme

• The Assam Government has issued the official guidelines along with the application form for students under the Babu Aasoni.
• Students enrolled in undergraduate courses and postgraduate courses must apply through separate application forms.
• The Government of Assam provides the Babu Aasoni Scheme Application Form for both Undergraduate and Post Graduate students free of cost through their respective colleges.
• The Registrar or Principal of each college will announce the scheme and distribute the application forms to eligible students.
• Each educational institution must also appoint one or two Nodal Teachers to manage and implement the Babu Aasoni.
• Eligible students need to collect the Babu Aasoni Application Form from their college and fill in all the required details carefully.
• The application form requires students to enter their personal information, educational details, and bank account information.
• After completing the form, students must attach all the necessary documents and submit the application to the college administration office.
• The Registrar or Principal will collect the submitted forms and verify the details provided by the students.
• Once verification is complete, the college will upload the details of eligible students on the SAMARTH portal for automatic verification.
• The educational institution will ensure that every student submits a valid income certificate or the parents’ ration card along with the application form.
• The college authority will verify these documents and upload them on the portal.
• Officials from the Department of Higher Education, Government of Assam, will then recheck the student details submitted by the colleges.
• Students who meet all eligibility conditions will receive monthly financial assistance as a scholarship for a period of 10 months under this scheme.
