Introduction of PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana: A Brief Insight

• Honourable Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi launched the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (प्रधानमंत्री सूर्य घर मुफ्त बिजली योजना) in the country on 15th of February 2025.
• The main objective of the central government in starting this scheme is to encourage the people of the country to adopt green energy by installing a rooftop solar plant in their homes.
• PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is being implemented by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy of the Central Government.
• Government of India through Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana will now provide a financial subsidy to those consumers who are interested in installing a rooftop solar plant at their house.
• With this initiative, each consumer can get 300 units of electricity per month.
• The amount of subsidy provided under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Scheme depends directly on the capacity of the installed rooftop solar plant.
• A subsidy of Rs. 30,000/- per kW is applicable if the consumer decides to install a rooftop solar plant up to a capacity of 2 kW.
• And, if any consumer installed a rooftop solar plant of up to 3kW capacity, then the amount of subsidy applicable under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is Rs. 18,000/- per kW.
• But, if the capacity of an installed rooftop solar plant is more than 3 kW, then the maximum amount of subsidy applicable is Rs. 78,000.
• The Residential Welfare Associations or Group Housing Societies can also install a rooftop solar plant and apply for a subsidy under Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.
• However, the amount of subsidy provided by the Central Government to GHS/ RWA is Rs. 18,000/- per kW with a maximum subsidy of Rs. 78,000/-.
• Consumer Applicants from Special States such as North Eastern States, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, and Jammu & Kashmir will receive an additional 10% subsidy under the PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme.
• The collateral-free loan facility is also available for consumers under this scheme.
• Central Government estimates that with the PM Surya Ghar initiative, around 1 crore households will receive 300 units of electricity by March 2027.

Suitable Rooftop Solar Plant for Residential Households

Benefits Provided to Eligible Beneficiaries

• Eligible Consumers who are interested in installing the solar power plant on their rooftop will receive the following benefits from the Central Government under its PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana :-
  

  Benefits of up to 300 units per month of electricity. Subsidy will be provided for the Installation of a Rooftop Solar Power Plant. Residential Consumers will receive the following amount of subsidy :- Rs. 30,000/- per kW for up to 2 kW of Rooftop Solar Plant. Rs. 18,000/- per kW for up to 3 kW of Rooftop Solar Plant. Rs. 78,000/- for Rooftop Solar Plant of more than 3 kW Capacity. The Group Housing Societies and Residential Welfare Association will receive Rs. 18,000/- per kW on the installation of a Rooftop Solar Power Plant. 10% Additional Subsidy is applicable per kW for Special States. Beneficiary Households can also sell the surplus electricity to DISCOMs. Collateral-free and low-interest loans at 7% for Residential Consumers are also available.

Special States under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana

• Central Government grants special status to some states of the country under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.
• Those special states will receive the additional subsidy of 10% per kW on the installation of a rooftop solar plant at their house.
• The following are the special states which are eligible to receive an additional 10% per kW subsidy under Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana :-
  • All North Eastern States. (Seven Sisters)
  • Sikkim.
  • Himachal Pradesh.
  • Uttarakhand.
  • Jammu and Kashmir.
  • Ladakh.
  • Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
  • Lakshadweep.

Eligibility Conditions Required to be Fulfilled

• Subsidy on the installation of a rooftop solar power plant will be provided to only those beneficiaries who fulfil the below-mentioned eligibility criteria of PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana :-
  • The applicant should be an Indian Resident.
  • Residential Consumers and Residential Welfare Societies (RWA) are only eligible to apply.
  • Residential Welfare Societies can apply for a maximum of 500kW capacity solar plant.
  • Loan Facility is available for Residential Consumers only.
  • The applicant should have enough space for the installation of the Solar Plant.

• Beneficiary Applicant will have to submit the following documents on the portal or on the mobile app at the time of applying for the Central Government’s PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana :-
  • Latest Electricity Bill.
  • Mobile Number of the Applicant.

• Beneficiary Residential Consumers or Group Housing Societies/ Resident Welfare Associations can apply for PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana through the following ways to install a rooftop solar plant and avail the benefit of subsidy on the installation cost :-
  • Through the Official Website of PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.
  • Through the Official Mobile Application of PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.

Online Application Process through the Official Website

• Central Government has launched the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana Official Website to provide a hassle-free online application facility to beneficiaries.
  
• Beneficiary Applicant will have to visit the official portal, choose the Consumer section and click on “Apply Now”.
  
• A new window will open in which the applicant will have to enter their working mobile number which will be further verified through OTP authentication.
  
• Applicant will have to complete their profile by entering their Name, Email, Communication Address, State, District and Pin Code as shown below in image.
  
• A dashboard will open from which the applicant will now have to click on “Apply for Solar Rooftop”.
  
• Thereafter, enter your State, District, choose the Electricity Distribution Company/ Utility and enter your consumer account number.
  
• Portal will fetch the details from the Electricity Consumer Account Number.
• Verify the details and fill out the Online Application Form of PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.
• Check all the pre-filled details and click on the submit button to submit the application form.
• The government will first give the feasibility approval to the beneficiary applicant; thereafter applicant will have to choose the vendor to install the rooftop solar plant.
• The applicant will also have to submit their bank account details after the feasibility approval.
• The selected vendor will then install the rooftop solar plant at the house of the consumer and submit the installation details to the DISCOM. (Electricity Company)
• The Assistant Engineer of the respected DISCOM will visit the house of the applicant and inspect the installed solar plant.
• DISCOM company will then submit its report to the central government regarding the successful installation.
• The beneficiary applicant will then receive the amount of subsidy as promised by the Central Government under its PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana according to the installed capacity of the rooftop solar plant.
• Application Status of PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana can be checked in the My Application Section in the Portal Dashboard.
• Call on 15555, in case any help or assistance is required regarding Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.
• Further, Beneficiary Consumer can also file an online complaint under the PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme by clicking on the “Raise a Query” section in the dashboard.
  

Online Application Process through the Official Mobile App

• Both Android and IOS Mobile App of PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli are available through which beneficiary consumers can apply for Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana Online.
  
• Download Android Mobile App from the Google Play Store.
  
• And, IOS Users can download the mobile app from Apple App Store.
  
• Click on “Apply for Rooftop Solar” to apply for a solar plant.
  
• Fill in the details in the application form, such as Name, Mobile Number, State, District, and Electricity Company Name.
• The mobile app will fetch the details through the electricity connection number and prefill the details in the application form.
• Proceed further and choose the vendor for the installation of the rooftop solar plant.
• After approval, the selected vendor will install the solar plant on the roof of the beneficiary and forward the report to the DISCOM Company.
• The officials of the DISCOM Company will visit the house of the consumer and do a site inspection.
• Thereafter, the subsidy amount will be directly transferred to the bank account of the beneficiary consumer.
