Introduction of Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana: A Brief Insight
- Government of India launched Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) on 1st of January 2017.
- The main objective behind launching this scheme is to provide financial assistance to pregnant women who belong to socially disadvantaged and economically backwards sections of society.
- PM Matru Vandana Yojana also aims to improve the nutritional status of pregnant women and their children and compensate working women for their wage losses.
- Earlier, this scheme was known as Indira Gandhi Matritva Sahyog Yojana, then in the year 2017, the Central Government started this with a new name.
- This scheme is implemented by the Ministry of Women and Child Development with the help of respective State Governments.
- One-time financial assistance of Rs. 5,000/- in two installments will be provided by the Central Government to all eligible first-time pregnant women under Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana.
- First Installment of Rs. 3,000/- will be provided on registration of pregnancy, and at least 1 ANC checkup of pregnant women will be done within 6 months from the date of LPM.
- Second Installment of Rs. 2,000/- will be provided after the birth of a child.
- The amount of the Second Child will be released only when the child receives their first BCG, OPV, DPT, and Hepatitis B immunization.

Benefits Provided to Eligible Beneficiaries
- Government of India will provide the following benefits to all eligible pregnant women under its Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana :-
- One-time financial Assistance will be provided to Pregnant Women Beneficiaries.
- Rs. 5,000/- in two installments will be provided for the First Child Birth.
- First Installment is of Rs. 3,000/- and Second is of Rs. 2,000/-.
- First Installment is provided before the birth of the Child, and the Second Installment will be provided after the birth of the Child.
- Rs. 6,000/- will be provided for the Second Pregnancy only if the born child is a Girl.
Eligibility Conditions Required to be Fulfilled
- Financial Assistance of Rs. 5,000/- for first birth and Rs. 6,000/- for second girl child birth will only be provided to those beneficiaries who fulfill the following eligibility criteria of Central Government’s Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana :-
- Pregnant Women and Lactating Mothers are Eligible.
- The pregnancy of Beneficiary Women should be first.
- Women with a Second Pregnancy are also Eligible if a Girl Child is born.
- Having an Aadhaar Card and an Aadhaar-linked bank Account is Mandatory.
- Application under PMMVY should be submitted before 730 Days of Pregnancy.
- Pregnant Women Beneficiaries should belong to the socially and Economically Disadvantaged Section of Society.
Socially and Economically Disadvantaged Society Section
- Benefits of Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana will only be provided to socially and economically disadvantaged sections of society. According to the Government of India, the below mentioned categories will be considered as socially and economically disadvantaged :-
- Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe Category Women/
- 40% or More Disabled Women.
- BPL Ration Card Holder Women.
- Beneficiary Women of Ayushman Bharat – PM Jan Arogya Yojana.
- E Shram Card Holder Women.
- Women Beneficiaries of PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana.
- MGNREGA Job Card Holder Women.
- Beneficiary whose Annual Family Income is not more than Rs. 8 Lakh.
- Pregnant and Lactating ASHA/ AWW/ AWH.

How Beneficiaries Can Apply to Avail the Benefit of this Scheme
- Registration of Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana will be done when the pregnant woman completes their first Anti-Natal Checkup (ANC) within 6 months from LMP date.
- Pregnant Women will have to visit their area’s Anganwadi Centre to get themselves registered under Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana.
- Anganwadi Worker present at the Anganwadi Centre will register pregnant women in Pradhanmantri Matru Vandana Yojana.
- Ayushman Card or Aadhaar Card or E Shram Card is needed at the time of registration.
- Anganwadi Worker will Login in PM Matru Vandana Yojana Official Website or the PM Matru Vandana Official Mobile with their Login ID and Password.
- Pregnant Women’s Documents and Aadhaar/ Bank-linked mobile numbers will be verified through OTP authentication.
- Live Photo Capture and Signature will also be uploaded by the Anganwadi Worker of Pregnant Women Beneficiary.
- Beneficiary Pregnant Women will receive the Beneficiary ID/ Registration Number of Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana on their registered mobile number after successful registration.
- Respective Officials will verify the details of received applications and approve them if found eligible.
- First Instalment of Pradhanmantri Matru Vandana Yojana of Rs. 3,000/- and Second Instalment of Rs. 2,000/- after childbirth will be directly transferred into the Aadhaar-linked bank Account of the Pregnant woman beneficiary.
- Earlier, Pregnant Women had registered themselves online through the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana Official Website.
- But the Ministry of Women and Child Development has stopped this service for now, and only Anganwadi Centres are authorised to register pregnant women under this scheme.
