Introduction of Tamil Nadu Amma Baby Care Kit Scheme: A Brief Insight

• Amma Baby Care Kit Scheme was started by the Tamil Nadu Government in the year 2015.
• The main aim behind starting this scheme is to improve the hygiene of the mother and the newborn baby.
• This scheme also encourages new mothers to inculcate hygienic practices among themselves and their newborn babies.
• This scheme is implemented by the Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine of the Government of Tamil Nadu.
• New Mothers will now get an Amma Baby Care Kit for their newborn babies, which consists of 16 daily care essential items.
• Each Amma Baby Care Kit is worth Rs. 1,000/-.
• 16 essential items of a baby care kit consist towel, a dress, shampoo, oil, napkin, bed, protective net, soap and box, nail clipper, toy, hand wash, and many more.
• Only those postnatal mothers are eligible to get this kit under Amma Baby Care Kit Thittam of Tamil Nadu Government who deliver her child in any Government Hospital or Government Health Facility.
• No baby care kit will be provided if the delivery of a child is in a private hospital.
• At present, no online application process for this scheme is available.
• Beneficiary mothers will have to apply by visiting the Anganwadi Centre by taking the help of the Anganwadi Worker.
• Beneficiary women can also apply for the “PM Matru Vandana Yojana” of the Central Government, in which financial assistance will be provided for the birth of a child, and “Magalir Urimai Thogai” of the Tamil Nadu Government, in which monthly financial assistance will be provided.

Benefits Provided to Eligible Beneficiaries

• Tamil Nadu Government will provide the following benefits to all new mothers who deliver their child in any government hospital under its Amma Baby Care Kit Scheme :-
  • Baby Care Kit will be provided for Newborns.
  • Each Kit contains 16 essential daily care items for a newborn.
  • The cost of each kit is around Rs. 1,000/-.
  • Baby Care Kit will be distributed at Anganwadi Centres.

• The following items will be included in every baby care kit which is provided for newborn children under the Amma Baby Care Kit Scheme of the Government of Tamil Nadu :-

Eligibility Conditions Required to be Fulfilled

• Baby Care Kit having 16 essential items for newborn babies, will be provided to only those beneficiaries who fulfill the below-mentioned eligibility criteria of Tamil Nadu Government’s Amma Baby Care Kit Scheme :-
  • Permanent Resident Women of Tamil Nadu are only Eligible.
  • Women should deliver their newborn child in a Government Hospital or in a Government Health Facility.

Documents Required to be Attached

• The following documents will have to be submitted at the time of application for the baby care kit under the Amma Baby Care Kit Scheme of the Tamil Nadu Government :-
  • Residence Proof of Tamil Nadu.
  • Aadhaar Card.
  • Proof of Institutional Delivery.
  • Mobile Number.
  • MAMTA Card.

How Beneficiaries Can Apply to Avail the Benefit of this Scheme

• The only way to apply for the Amma Baby Care Kit Scheme is through an Offline Application Form.
• Application Form of the Amma Baby Care Kit Scheme of the Government of Tamil Nadu is available in the Anganwadi Centre.
• Collect the application form and fill it out carefully.
• Anganwadi Worker will help the beneficiary women to fill out the application form.
• Attach all the documents with the application form.
• Submit the Amma Care Baby Kit Scheme Application Form along with all the documents in the Anganwadi Centre.
• Anganwadi Worker will forward the received application form to the Directorate for further approval after preliminary verification.
• Baby Care Kit will be distributed at the Anganwadi Centre to selected women beneficiaries.
• Contact the anganwadi worker in case any help or assistance is required regarding the Tamil Nadu Government’s Amma Baby Care Kit Scheme.
