Introduction of Punjab Widow and Destitute Women Pension Scheme: A Brief Insight

Punjab Government started lots of financial assistance schemes as a monthly pension, to support financially unstable persons.
Some of the Punjab government’s major pension schemes are the “Old Age Pension Scheme” and the “Disability Pension Scheme.“
Punjab Government also started a pension scheme for women of the State who doesn’t have any source of income.
The name of the scheme is “Widow and Destitute Women Pension Scheme”.
This scheme is a combination of 4 sub-schemes due to the categorization of its beneficiaries.
The sub-schemes are “Widow Pension Scheme Punjab”, Destitute Women Pension Scheme Punjab”, “Unmarried Married Pension Scheme Punjab, and “Divorced Women Pension Scheme Punjab”.
But all of the sub-schemes are operational under the 1 umbrella scheme named “Widow and Destitute Women Pension Scheme” of the Punjab Government.
Social Security and Women & Child Development Department of the Punjab Government is the implementing department of this scheme.
Each Eligible woman beneficiary will get Rs. 1,500/- per month as pension under the Widow and Destitute Women Pension Scheme of the Government of Punjab.
The amount of pension was very low earlier than the government increased it to Rs. 1,500/- per month along with the amount of another social welfare scheme named Ashirwad (Shagun) Scheme.
If any woman applicant’s family annual income is more than Rs. 60,000/- per year, then she is not eligible to apply for the monthly pension under this scheme.
Destitute Women, Divorcee Women, Unmarried Women and Widowed Women are only eligible to apply for a monthly pension of Rs. 1,500/- under this scheme.
Punjab Government provides both Online and Offline Application facilities for women beneficiaries to apply for monthly pension under the Widow and Destitute Women Pension Yojana of the Punjab Government.
Online Application Form is available on the Digital Punjab Portal.
Whereas, Offline Application Form is available in the Sub Divisional Magistrate, Child Development Project Officer, District Social Security Officer, Angranwadi Centre, Panchayat Office, Sewa Kendra, or BDPO Office.
The government also sets the age limit for women beneficiaries, in which the age limit for widows or destitute women is less than 58 years and the age limit for unmarried and divorced women is more than 30 years.

Eligibility Conditions Required to be Fulfilled

Rs. 1,500/- per month pension under the Government of Punjab’s Widow and Destitute Women Pension Scheme will only be provided to those applicants who fulfill the below-mentioned eligibility criteria of the scheme :-

Only Permanent Residents of Punjab are Eligible.
Beneficiary Applicants’ Annual Family Income should be less than Rs. 60,000/- per year.
Beneficiary Applicant should have less than 200 Square meters in an Urban Area.
Widow or Destitute Women’s Age should be less than 58 years.
Unmarried and divorced women’s Age should be more than 30 years.
If the Beneficiary Applicant owned any one land area from the following mentioned land, then they are also eligible to apply for per month pension :-
- Maximum 5 acres of land in the Waterlogged Area, OR
- Maximum 2.5 acres of Nehri/ Chahi Land, OR
- Maximum 5 acres of Barani Land.

Offline Application Procedure

Widow and Destitute Women Beneficiaries can apply for a monthly pension of Rs. 1,500/- under this scheme through the Offline Application Form.
Punjab Widow and Destitute Women Pension Scheme Offline Application Form can be collected from any of the following government offices :-
- BDPO or Panchayat Office.
- Sub Divisional Magistrate’s Office (SDM).
- District Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) Office.
