Introduction of Cashless Treatment of Road Accident Victims Scheme: A Brief Insight

  • Central Government launched the Cashless Treatment of Road Accident Victims Scheme on 14-03-2024 as a pilot project in Chandigarh and Assam.
  • Then on 05-05-2025, the Government will extend its benefits to the whole country, and now the benefits will be applicable across India.
  • The main objective of the Government behind starting this cashless medical scheme is to establish a robust ecosystem in which timely medical care will be provided to those victims who meet with a road accident during the golden hour.
  • This scheme is implemented by the Central Government’s Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in coordination with State Health Agencies, Police, and Hospitals.
  • The government will provide free and cashless treatment to those victims who somehow met with a road accident and got injured.
  • Road Accident Victims can avail the benefit of cashless treatment up to Rs. 1,50,000/- under the Cashless Treatment of Road Accident Victims Scheme.

    • Free Cashless Treatment up to Rs. 1.5 Lakh.
    • Treatment will be provided for a maximum period of 7 Days from the Accident.
    • Free Cashless Treatment will apply to all Road Accidents caused by any motor vehicle on any category of road.
    • Trauma and Polytrauma Care Health Package Included.
    • Cashless Treatment at more than 30,000/- emapanelled hospitals in Ayushman Bharat Yojana.

Eligibility Conditions Required to be Fulfilled

  • Free Cashless Treatment will be provided to road accident victims only if the following eligibility conditions of the Cashless Treatment of Road Accident Victims Scheme are fulfilled :-
    • Police will be informed within 24 Hours about the Accident.
    • Free Cashless Treatment will only be Applicable in Ayushman Bharat PM – Jan Arogya Yojana Empanelled Hospitals.
    • Treatment will also include Trauma and Polytrauma Care.
    • Cashless Treatment will be provided only for 7 Days from the Date of the Accident.

    • Aadhaar Card of the Victim.
    • Or Any Valid photograph-based Identity Proof.

How Beneficiaries Can Apply to Avail the Benefit of this Scheme

  • There is no need to apply for the Cashless Treatment of Road Accident Victims Scheme to avail the benefit of free cashless treatment at the hospital if someone meets with a road accident.
  • All Indian Citizens are automatically eligible to avail the benefit of cashless treatment at the empanelled hospital if they, unluckily somehow met with a road accident.
  • If any person is met with a road accident by any motor vehicle on any road, then he has to visit the nearby hospital with the help of bystanders at any hospital which is empanelled under Ayushman Bharat – PM Jan Arogya Yojana.
  • Informing the Police within 24 hours of the accident is mandatorily required.
  • All the documentation related to getting cashless treatment under the Central Government’s Cashless Treatment of Road Accident Victims Scheme will be done at the hospital level and done by hospital staff present.
  • Empanelled Hospital then raised a reimbursement for providing free and cashless treatment from the Government which is reimbursed to the hospital from the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund.
