Introduction of PM RAHAT Scheme: A Brief Insight

• The Central Government first introduced the Cashless Treatment of Road Accident Victims Scheme on 14-03-2024 as a pilot project in Chandigarh and Assam.
• Later, on 05-05-2025, the government expanded the scheme across the country.
• On 14 February 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched it nationwide under the name “PM RAHAT Scheme”.
• The full form of the PM RAHAT Scheme is “Prime Minister’s Road Accident Victims Hospitalisation & Assured Treatment Scheme”.
• The government started the PM RAHAT Scheme to build a strong emergency care system that provides immediate medical help to road accident victims during the golden hour.
• The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways implements this scheme in coordination with State Health Agencies, police departments, and hospitals.
• Under the PM RAHAT Scheme, the government provides free cashless treatment to people injured in road accidents.

Benefits Provided to Eligible Beneficiaries

• Under the PM RAHAT Scheme, the Central Government provides the following benefits to people who suffer injuries in a road accident :-
  • Free cashless treatment up to Rs. 1,50,000/-.
  • Medical care for a maximum of 7 days from the date of the accident.
  • Coverage for all road accidents caused by any motor vehicle on any type of road.
  • Trauma and polytrauma care are included in the treatment package.
  • Cashless treatment available at more than 30,000 empanelled hospitals under Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana.
  • The PM RAHAT Scheme ensures that road accident victims receive immediate and financial stress-free medical treatment across a wide hospital network in India.

Eligibility Conditions Required to be Fulfilled

• Road accident victims can receive free cashless treatment under the PM RAHAT Scheme only if they meet these conditions of the scheme :-
  • Inform the police about the accident within 24 hours.
  • Get admitted to the hospital within 24 hours of the accident.
  • Take treatment only at hospitals empanelled under Ayushman Bharat – PM Jan Arogya Yojana.
  • Receive treatment for trauma and polytrauma injuries, as the scheme covers both.
  • Avail free cashless treatment for up to 7 days from the date of the accident.
  • Claim benefits regardless of nationality, as the scheme supports both Indian citizens and foreign nationals.

• To receive free treatment under the PM RAHAT Scheme, the victim needs to show a basic identity document at the hospital :-
  

  The hospital may ask for :- Aadhaar Card of the injured person, or Any valid photo identity proof issued by the government. The hospital staff will verify the identity and complete the required formalities at their end. No complicated paperwork or prior registration is required to get treatment under this scheme.

How Beneficiaries Can Apply to Avail the Benefit of this Scheme

• There is no need to fill out any application form to get benefits under the PM RAHAT Scheme.
• If someone meets with a road accident, they can directly receive free cashless treatment at the hospital.
• Both Indian citizens and foreign nationals can get the benefit of this scheme.
• If anyone suffers injuries in a road accident involving a motor vehicle on any road, they should immediately go to the nearest empanelled hospital.
• Bystanders, police, ambulance staff, or any helpful person can assist the injured person in reaching the hospital.
• The hospital must be listed under Ayushman Bharat – PM Jan Arogya Yojana.
• The victim or helpers must inform the police about the accident and ensure hospital admission within 24 hours of the incident.
